If you are athletic, it is important that you understand the truth about how helpful compression garments can be when it comes to your recovery. According to most that are highly active, recovery is an area where constant improvement is necessary. While there are many methods currently available for recovery, compression garments are the latest and greatest method, according to most athletes, medical professionals, and physical therapists. A recent study was conducted and published within the publication, “Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research”, on whether or not the use of compression garments during a recovery period would help the test subjects perform better in sprints and other types of runs. In this guide, you will be introduced to the results of that study.
The Participants and the Conditions
The individuals that were placed in the study were male rugby players with an exceptional level of training. A total of 22 men were used. Each of the men was provided with a garment to place over their legs. Many men were provided with compression garments. The others were provided with items that were non-compressive, in nature. Each man was informed to wear their garment for 24 hours following their participation in various exercises. Once the 24 hours passed, the garments were taken off and the men were required to perform in a 40 meter race. That was immediately followed by a 3 kilometer run. One week later, the test subjects were switched and the running tests were performed, once more.
At the end of the study, it was established that the individuals that were provided the actual compression garments during the study performed better than those that were not provided with the compression garments. The fatigue times of those particular participants were also reduced. In addition to these findings, it was established that the DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) was much lower in those that wore the compression garments during their recovery. While the science behind the garments is considered to be a bit of a mystery among medical professionals and physical therapists, it is believed that the garments aid in optimizing the blood flow. In turn, this is believed to enhance the blood flow of the arterial muscle, which optimizes recovery time among athletes.
If you are an athlete, or you are highly physical, it is likely in your best interest to wear compression garments whenever the opportunity presents itself. Not only will you feel better, you will find that you are able to perform better. Compression clothing pieces are highly engineered pieces that include an elastic-based gradient type of compression fabric. The fabric forms a mold around the regions of the body which they are placed. Once in position, compression garments successfully increases the flow of the blood and optimizes the overall performance of the lymphatic system.
